SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for the operation of heavy construction type equipment used in constructing, ditching and other maintenance such as storm drainage work, etc. Work is usually assigned and monitored by a Supervisor.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  •  Drive and/or operate equipment characterized as being large or heavy equipment, such as but not limited to an excavator, large combination jet/vacuum trucks, large buses, heavy duty dump trucks, side loader trucks & grapple trucks. A valid Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with appropriate endorsements is required
  • Must be extremely proficient in the operation of at least THREE of the following Grapple Truck, Side Loader Truck, Rear Loader Truck, Front-End Loader, Jet-Vac Truck, Jet-Rodder Truck, Dump Truck 25,000 minimum GVW, Asphalt Truck, Large or Small Excavators, Sweeper, Large Bus, Boom Mower, Side Mower, Backhoe, Vibratory Compactor, Skid Steer, Combo 25,000 minimum GVW Dump Truck and Medium Trailers over 14,000 minimum GVW and excavator OR Assigned daily to a Jet-Vac Truck and or a Jet-Rodder Truck and six months minimum experience OR Combo 25,000 minimum GVW Dump Truck and Medium Trailer minimum 14,000 GVW with Excavator and one year minimum on the job experience OR Large Bus with one year minimum on the job experience.
  •  May operate smaller and less complex equipment as needs dictate.
  •  Must provide routine preventative maintenance including greasing to vehicles and equipment as required.
  •  Report serious mechanical difficulties for repair.
  • Adjust equipment as needed for specialized operations requiring a high degree of accuracy.
  •  Clear and dig drainage ditches, sets culverts and pipe, cuts driveways and roadways in the repair of utilities, grounds and roads. Removes and or hauls materials, debris and spoils.
  •  Carry 18 passengers or more.
  • Perform physical labor as required.
  • May lead a crew.
  •  As a Lead Operator, responsible for dispensing fleet, providing training/refresher training to Operators I and II and providing feedback to supervisor.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May directly supervise 2-5 employees classified as General Maintenance Workers in various equipment operations.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees and directing work.

  •   Possess skills in the operation of complex, heavy mobile equipment.
  •  Good knowledge of particular characteristics, operating procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated.
  •  Ability to supervise a small crew in simple operations. Good knowledge of safety policies.
  • Ability to organize daily assignments of work to be accomplished. Ability to understand oral and written assignments.
  • Ability to perform all duties of Large Equipment Operator I and II.
  •  Regular prompt attendance is an essential function to this position.
  •  The ability to get along and promote a harmonious working environment with vendors, supervisors, citizens, and co-workers is an essential function of this position.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree GED required. Two years experience as a Large Equipment Operator I or II; or equivalent combination of education or experience.

 LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively with the general public or employees of organization.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurements, volume, and distance.

 REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with appropriate endorsements is required.
